What Makes Sonic the Hedgehog Worth a Quarter Million Dollars?

Amy is sweet and caring without being a complete yandere, Knuckles is a friendly rival without being a complete idiot, and so on. It’s good stuff that should please longtime fans of these characters. Although it was not the first fully 3D Sonic (as the character had already been seen three-dimensionally in Sonic Jam and Sonic R), it was the first game in which Sega’s mascot really shone in a new dimension. Sonic Adventure became an instant classic thanks to its varied gameplay , a very interesting plot and stages that were spectacular for the time.

  • Whatever the case, Sonic Adventure 2 clocks in at our favorite—and only—main play sonic games series 3D Sonic game.
  • Sonic Adventure became a system seller when it launched in September 1999 alongside Namco’s weapons-based fighter Soul Calibur.
  • If the Special Stage layout is edited to remove objects, the player can go out of bounds.

The fact that so many people disagree between Sonic 2, 3 and CD being best really shows what a roll Sega were on in those days. I genuinely believe that the Sega Saturn would have been far more successful if they’d made a fully fledged, 2D Sonic 4 on the system. Could see its flaws even as a child, but it is a guilty pleasure of mine for sure! Lol no game is rated above 9, and only five are rated above 8. @Snatcher Yeah, it may change because of the real time score updates, but I’m surprised Rise of Lyric even charted.

Sonic & Knuckles (1994, Genesis)

Later ports did not do justice to this great adventure of the blue hedgehog. SEGA’s hedgehog celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2021, but couldn’t celebrate it with a new video game. Sonic Frontiers, a title that will explore open-world mechanics on consoles and PC, will be available later this year, 2022. In the meantime, it is a good time to remember the franchise, those products that we have enjoyed during these decades of fun at breakneck speed.

There’s a rather interesting story behind the music in this port. While it’s presented as rather endearing MIDI recreations, the tunes are still the same arrangements you hear in the Mega Drive original. Until you get to the fourth stage, Carnival Night, at which point veterans will immediately notice that the song is very different.

[Review] Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom

I own every single one of these and it always comes back to the very first Sonic game. Sonic 1 on both the Master System/Game Gear and Megadrive are the best games to me. @Dr_Corndog And it doesn’t even beat three of the games included. I understand Sonic 3 placing higher, Michael Jackson music and all that, but Origins should still beat Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 2. I would also agree that both of them would be Top 5 Sonic games in this fanbase. @Bolt_Strike I wonder where the Xbox/PlayStation version of Sonic Generations would have appeared on this list?

Being able to take some major risks would help you get through stages much quicker and look cool. Making a single mistake would kill you, especially in the Mad Space level. That level looked amazing as Sonic or Shadow are grinding through space looking down on the Earth. While Sega released a few different games in 3D such as Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic the Fighters, and Sonic Adventure, it was Sonic Adventure 2 that really did it right. I remember starting Sonic Adventure 2 as a teenager and selecting the Hero’s story first and being blown away by the intro and first stage. City Escape more than showcased what the game offered and did a great job, especially with the music.
