Speaking of characters, another bold addition was the customizable character creator. Though the player avatar is awkwardly written into the story, the fact that Sega saw the importance of Sonic fan characters and put them in the game shows an understanding of Sonic fandom. However, this kind of appeal to fandom is a double-edged sword. Giving into fan desires, be it suggestions or demands, can impede creative freedom for the developer. It features the Simpson family going on a plane trip together, but while being his usual, mischievous self, Bart ends up breaking a window on the plane and getting sucked out, falling to his death.
It’s not surprising that Tails will be there, but it’s still unclear who else exactly will make an appearance in the game. I won’t be surprised at all if at least Knuckles has a major part to play since his people were in charge of protecting the Chaos Emeralds, and by extension, the Master Emerald. There are a lot of hopes and dreams riding on Sonic Frontiers. We’ll have to see if the game holds up to the hype that the devs are striving for.
The problems still could’ve been avoided if those in charge had the wherewithal to push the game’s release date back. Insisting that the game much be ready for the holiday season 2006 to line up with both the release of the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 and Sonic’s 15th anniversary. The more we go over how to improve any issues with the series’ character issues, the more we can help things hopefully improve in the future. Granted, it probably still won’t stop the aforementioned cycle from happening again when the next game comes out, but hey, every bit helps. But in contrast with the more traditional designs the Hero characters can have, right now he sticks out like a sore thumb, almost like a parody of what we don’t want from new characters here. So yeah, the idea of Sonic fan characters being cheap and lazy designs with zero effort put into them sadly tends to be the dominant face of this particular fandom in the eyes of others. So including fan characters by having us simply customize and recolor various bases, as opposed to utilizing a popular design among the fandom, is going to get some jeers.
Local 58 is a YouTube web series created by Kris Straub revolving around a news channel that is being constantly hijacked. The web series is notable for its effects to make it look like an actual television broadcast. Each episode revolves around a different scenario in which the news channel is being hijacked. For example, “Contingency” shows a hijacking where a foreign country had allegedly captured America and the broadcast tells the viewers to commit suicide via gunshot.
